Wow, what a night. It’s safe to say the opening of Mount Gravatt Marketta and accordingly Mussel Brothers was an absolute success. Truth be told, not knowing what to expect when you’re first starting out is daunting.

Knowing you have a great product you want people to experience and the anxiousness of waiting for each step to be completed when your opening a food business, is one of the weirdest feelings I’ve ever felt. From obtaining your food licence, constructing and styling your stall, ordering your first (HUGE) lot of delicious live Kinkawooka Mussels from SA to setting up the stall and waiting for your first customer all you can think is “I know this is a great product, I hope the people come”. Come they did.

With an enormous amount of help and effort from a fantastic group of family and friends, we hit the ground running and opened on time at 4pm, selling our first dish at exactly 4:01pm. In the anticipation of a big night and not wanting to sell out, we had ordered an unthinkable number of live mussels (108kg to be exact!) and in the first two hours we had sold more than 50% of the little morsels. Selling out was actually a possibility. Come 9pm after a massive 5 hours, the crowd started to die down and luckily as we were almost out of both mussels and steam. We were left over with just enough to feed the team and the guys over at King of Wings who were kind enough to trade. (Pro Marketta tip: Go get some of those wings – YUM!).

Favourite Mussels of the night: Classic – White Wine, Tomato & Garlic (by a long shot!)

Overall this jump in the deep end experience was full of learning and great memories. With a (now) more streamlined process we can’t wait for next Saturday night!

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the opening and the heap of you that made an effort to come over and tell us how delicious our mussels were after you polished them off. This is what we at Mussel Brothers live for! Oh and remember, only the weak use a fork.

Meet Andrew, our mighty mussel farmer, worshiped by all mussel brothers, and prasied by mussel consumers the world around. Andrew from Kinkawooka mussels is a 2nd generation fisherman/farmer, operating out of Port Lincoln, along the Eyre peninsular, in South Australia.

We're really excited to be sharing our journey with Kinkawooka , as they seem to share the same passion for growing and farming these packets of delight as we do cooking, and serving them. We calculate (with a year of successful operation) we would contribute a whopping 0.4% of his annual yield in mussels.
